START WITH YOUR TAX PURPOSE

Living overseas.
Filing in the U.S.

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is an IRS tax-processing number for people who need a U.S. taxpayer identification number for federal tax purposes and are not eligible for a Social Security number. Living outside the United States does not prevent you from applying.

Your reason for applying controls the documents and filing route. A U.S. income-tax return is generally submitted with Form W-7 unless a qualifying exception applies. We connect the application with your actual tax facts rather than treating an ITIN as a general-purpose identification number.

APPLICATION SITUATIONS

Find the situation closest to yours.

01

U.S. income & tax filing

Nonresident taxpayers with U.S.-source income or a filing obligation may need an ITIN. We review the return type, income records, and withholding information.

02

Property & investment activity

U.S. rental property, real-estate transactions, or certain investment and partnership reporting situations may support a federal tax purpose. The exact facts matter.

03

Spouse, dependents & renewals

Family-related applications depend on allowable tax benefits and supporting records. Renewal needs are reviewed against your planned tax filing.

An ITIN is not an EIN or work authorization. Opening a bank account, starting a business, or owning a U.S. LLC alone does not qualify someone for an ITIN.

ITIN DOCUMENTS FOR OVERSEAS APPLICANTS

Build the package
before you submit.

Your checklist depends on whether you are applying as a taxpayer, spouse, or dependent and whether a tax return or exception applies. We identify missing information before finalizing the application.

A

Form W-7 & application details

Full legal name, date of birth, foreign address, mailing address, application reason, prior ITIN information, and the other relevant Form W-7 details.

B

Identity & foreign status

Original identification documents or issuing-agency-certified copies, as required. A valid passport generally establishes both identity and foreign status; dependent requirements can differ.

C

Tax return or exception evidence

A prepared federal tax return when required, or documentation for a specific qualifying exception. Include relevant income statements, withholding records, and prior IRS correspondence.

Certification matters. An ordinary photocopy or a copy notarized by a general notary is not the same as a copy certified by the document’s issuing agency. Arrange the correct document route before sending originals.
CAA ASSISTANCE FROM ABROAD

Understand the
passport-handling route.

For eligible documents, CAA authentication may avoid mailing your original passport to the IRS. We explain the interview and document arrangements before you proceed.

Ask about your document options ↗

Video interview ≠ camera-only verification

IRS guidance permits a video interview, but requires the CAA to possess the original identification documents or issuing-agency-certified copies during it.

Displaying a passport on camera or uploading a scan alone is insufficient. Some dependent documents must be sent to the IRS.

COMMON APPLICATION PROBLEMS

Resolve the gaps
before mailing.

Incomplete information can lead to further correspondence. We review application consistency, document requirements, and the filing reason before submission.

  • Missing signatures or inconsistent names across documents
  • An unsupported tax purpose or incomplete exception evidence
  • Incorrect document copies or incomplete dependent records
  • Missing income statements or tax-return information
  • A mailing address that cannot reliably receive IRS correspondence
  • Unanswered IRS notices or duplicate application attempts
OVERSEAS ITIN QUESTIONS

Answers before you apply.

Can I apply for an ITIN from outside the United States?

Yes. You can apply from abroad if you need an ITIN for a federal tax purpose and are not eligible for an SSN. Your application must include Form W-7, identity and foreign-status evidence, and a tax return or qualifying exception documents.

How do I obtain an ITIN from abroad?

Identify your tax purpose, select the correct Form W-7 reason, prepare your documents and any required tax return, then submit the complete package by the applicable IRS route. EZTAXACT helps coordinate the preparation and CAA document process.

Can I apply for an ITIN online?

You can begin intake and preparation online with a service provider. The IRS application is not completed simply by submitting an online intake form. The prepared Form W-7 package must be submitted using an accepted IRS process.

Do I have to travel to the United States?

An overseas application does not automatically require a U.S. trip. The document and interview arrangements must satisfy IRS rules. Confirm the available route before paying for travel or sending original documents.

Can I get an ITIN without mailing my passport to the IRS?

CAA authentication of eligible documents or issuing-agency-certified copies may avoid sending your original passport to the IRS. Some dependent documents require different handling. Ask which route applies to you.

Can a CAA verify my passport only through a video call?

No. Video may be used for the interview, but the CAA must possess the original documents or issuing-agency-certified copies during it. A scanned copy or a passport displayed on camera alone does not meet that requirement.

Can I apply without a tax return?

Only if you qualify for a specific Form W-7 exception and provide the required evidence. Living abroad or owning an LLC does not by itself establish an exception.

Does owning a U.S. LLC automatically qualify me for an ITIN?

No. Entity ownership and federal tax purpose are separate questions. An ITIN is not issued solely to start a business, open an account, or operate an e-commerce store.

How long does an ITIN application from abroad take?

The IRS advises allowing 9–11 weeks for applications from overseas. This is guidance, not a guaranteed completion date; incomplete records, additional-information requests, mailing, and workload can affect timing.

How much does applying from abroad cost?

The IRS does not charge to issue an ITIN. EZTAXACT service fees depend on the agreed application scope, document requirements, and any related tax preparation. Obtain a quote before proceeding.

Can I renew my ITIN while living abroad?

Yes, when renewal is required for your federal tax filing. We review the existing number, filing purpose, documents, and current renewal requirements before preparing Form W-7.

What if the IRS asks for more information?

Keep the complete notice and response deadline. Share it securely so the application, original submission, and requested documents can be reviewed before a response is prepared.
