Discuss your organization’s filing needs

Annual Return Selection

Which Form 990 Filing May Apply to Your Organization?

The correct annual filing depends on the organization’s size, type, finances, and IRS filing requirements. We review the facts before preparing the return.

Small Organization

Form 990-N

Eligible organizations whose gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less may generally satisfy the annual requirement with the IRS e-Postcard, subject to exceptions.

Full Return

Form 990

Used by larger or more complex exempt organizations and whenever the organization does not qualify to file a shorter Form 990-series return.

Filing thresholds do not by themselves determine every organization’s required return. Certain organizations have different filing rules or exceptions.

Expenses & Functional Reporting

Program service, management and general, fundraising, payroll, professional fees, grants, and other expenses.

Program Service Accomplishments

Description of the organization’s exempt-purpose activities and major program accomplishments.

Cash, investments, receivables, property, liabilities, net assets, and year-over-year balance-sheet reporting.

Compliance & Public Reporting

Why Accurate Form 990 Reporting Matters

Form 990-series returns are not only annual IRS filings. For many organizations, the return is also a public-facing financial and governance document reviewed by donors, grantmakers, regulators, and other stakeholders.

Maintain Filing Compliance

Meet annual IRS reporting obligations and reduce the risk created by missed required filings.

Support Transparency

Present financial and mission information consistently for stakeholders who may review the public return.

Strengthen Grant Readiness

Maintain current nonprofit reporting that may be requested during grant or funding due diligence.

Protect Organizational Continuity

Avoid recurring filing failures that can create serious compliance problems, including automatic revocation after three consecutive missed required annual filings.

Past-Due Nonprofit Filings

Missing a Prior Form 990-EZ or Form 990?

If an organization is behind on annual information returns, the filing history should be reviewed before simply submitting the current year. Required annual returns or notices that are not filed for three consecutive years can result in automatic revocation of federal tax-exempt status.

We can help organize prior-year financial records, identify missing filing years, prepare delinquent returns that fall within our service scope, and review IRS correspondence related to the filing history.

Nonprofit Tax Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Form 990-EZ & Form 990

What is the difference between Form 990-EZ and Form 990?

Form 990-EZ is a shorter annual information return generally available to organizations below specified gross-receipt and asset thresholds. Form 990 is the full annual information return used by larger or more complex organizations and organizations that do not qualify for a shorter filing.

When is a nonprofit Form 990-series return due?

Annual exempt-organization returns are generally due on the 15th day of the fifth month after the organization’s tax year ends, subject to applicable weekend, holiday, extension, and special rules.

Does every 501(c)(3) organization file Form 990?

No. Filing requirements vary by organization type, size, and applicable exception. Some organizations may file Form 990-EZ or 990-N, and certain organizations may be excepted from the annual Form 990-series filing requirement.

Can you prepare a prior-year nonprofit return?

Yes, we can review the organization’s filing history and available financial records and prepare prior-year Form 990-EZ or Form 990 returns that fall within our engagement scope.

What happens if a nonprofit does not file for three consecutive years?

An exempt organization that is required to file an annual return or notice and fails to do so for three consecutive years can have its federal tax-exempt status automatically revoked.

Are Form 990-series returns filed electronically?

Most Form 990-series annual returns are required to be filed electronically, subject to the rules applicable to the organization and filing year.
