Has your ITIN expired?

An ITIN expires if it is not used on a U.S. federal tax return for 3 consecutive tax years. It expires on December 31 after the third year without use.

Not sure about yours? Send us your last filing year or any IRS letter you received and we will help you check.

Do you need to renew?

  • Renew if an expired ITIN will be included on a U.S. federal tax return.
  • You may not need to renew if your ITIN only appears on information returns, such as Form 1099. Expired ITINs can still be used on those.
  • Do not renew if you now have a Social Security number. You cannot have both, so stop using the ITIN and notify the IRS.

What happens if you file with an expired ITIN

The IRS may delay processing your return, and you may not be able to claim certain credits until the ITIN is renewed. That can mean a smaller refund, or penalties and interest.

You do not need an ITIN to request a filing extension or to pay estimated tax.

IRS processing time is separate.

Documents to prepare

Renewals need supporting documents that prove your identity and foreign status. A valid passport is the only document that can do this alone. It must not be expired on the day you submit it.

The IRS accepts originals or certified copies from the issuing agency. It does not accept notarized copies, with a limited exception for military dependents. If your name has changed, include proof such as a marriage certificate or court order.

Spouses and dependents renewing to be claimed for a tax benefit must be listed on an attached federal tax return, with the schedule or form for that benefit. Dependents generally also need proof of U.S. residency.

How it works

  1. Tell us about your ITIN and your last filing year.
  2. We confirm whether you need to renew and list what we need.
  3. We prepare your Form W-7 and review your passport.
  4. We mail your application and explain what to expect from the IRS.

How long renewal takes

The IRS says to allow 7 weeks for a status notice, or 9 to 11 weeks during tax season (January 15 to April 30) or if you applied from overseas. The IRS sets these times, and we cannot promise an IRS result or date.

ITIN renewal questions

Can I renew from outside the United States?

Yes. We work with clients abroad. See getting an ITIN from abroad for how that works.

Can my family renew at the same time?

Yes, if they need their ITINs for a U.S. federal tax return. Spouses and dependents claimed for a tax benefit must be listed on an attached return.

Will I get a new number?

Renewal is for your existing ITIN. On Form W-7 you give the ITIN and the name it was issued under.

I have never had an ITIN. Is this the right page?

No. See our ITIN application services for first-time applicants.
